De Wilde grew up to be very attractive and boyish, a perfect fit for the new type of leading man. He finally reached to leading man status with Blue Denim (1959) with Carol Lynley. He gradually went to more adult roles as a teenager in The Missouri Traveler (1958) where he was the lead and top-billed. De Wilde’s character, similar to Joey in Shane (and is even also named Joey), looks up to Stewart’s character. De Wilde’s next film was the exciting western Night Passage (1957) with an impressive cast that includes James Stewart, Audie Murphy, and Dan Duryea. The film also starred Walter Brennan, Phil Harris, and Sidney Poitier. Brandon came back to the screen with another dramatic performance in Good-bye, My Lady (1956) where he finds a lost dog and bonds with it before the real owner comes back, asking for the dog.
